HomeMy WebLinkAbout2012 05-15 PRM I i I ICI MINUTES OF THE PROCEEDINGS OF THE PARK AND RECREATION COMMISSION FOR THE CITY OF BROOKLYN CENTER IN THE COUNTY OF HENNEPIN AND THE STATE OF MINNESOTA REGULAR SESSION MAY 15, 2012 ROOM#221- COMMUNITY CENTER CALL TO ORDER Vice Chairperson Shinnick called the meeting to order at 7:03 p.m. ROLL CALL Chair Sorenson, Commissioners, Ebert, Lee, Russell, Shinnick and Starling were present Also present were City Council liaison Carol Kleven,Public Works Director Steve Lillehaug and Community Activities, Recreation and Services Director Jim Glasoe. APPROVAL OF AGENDA j By consensus,the agenda was approved. APPROVAL OF MINUTES—March 20,2012,April 17,2012 There was a motion by Commissioner Russell, seconded by Commissioner Lee to approve the minutes of the March 20, 2012,Park&Recreation Commission as presented. The motion was passed unanimously. There was a motion by Commissioner Russell, seconded by Commissioner Lee to approve the minutes of the April 17, 2012,Park&Recreation Commission as presented. The motion was passed unanimously. COUNCIL LIAISON REPORT Councilmember Kleven provided the Commission with updates from May 14,2012 City Council meeting. SHINGLE CREEK TRAIL REALIGNMENT Public Works Director Steve Lillehaug presented an overview of the Shingle Creek Trail Realignment proposed by Three Rivers Park District. Mr. Lillehaug explained the anticipated project looks to realign trail segments along the Shingle Creels Regional trail from 1-694 to Bass I Lake Road. I I I I i Mr. Lillehaug noted the primary driving force behind the project was to reposition the trail to areas that were not prone to flooding. Mr. Lillehaug added the existing trail sections would be reverted to"nature"type trails. After some discussion, Commissioner Shinniek made a motion, seconded by Commissioner Russell,to recommend the City Council approve the Shingle Creek trail realignment. The motion passed unanimously. i i I COMMUNITY GARDENS UPDATE CARS Director Glasoe reported that the City Council,at their May 14,'2012,meeting, had asked the Park and Recreation and Housing Commissions to reconsider Centennial Park West as a site for the proposed Community Gardens Programs. Mr. Glasoe noted the intent would be to meet with the Housing Commission later tonight to discuss the recommendation. j EAST PALMER PARK, BASKETBALL HOOP INSTALLATION CARS Director Glasoe reported that Public Works staff were working toward installation of the basketball hoop at East Palmer Park,but were looking to do some repaving of the court as part of the improvement. Chair Sorenson asked about an approximate completion date. Public Work Director Lillehaug indicated he hoped to have things completed in 3-4 weeks. SET NEXT MEETING DATE By consensus,the next meeting of the Parks and Recreation Commission was set for June 19, 2012 at 7:00 p.m. MEETING ADJOURNED Commissioner Russell made a motion, seconded by Commissioner Starling, to adjourn the meeting at 7:38 p.m. The motion passed unanimously.
