CENTENNIAL CELEBRATION COMMITTEE
WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 15, 2010, 5:30 PM
MEETING NOTES
Keith Lester called the Centennial Celebration Committee meeting to order at 5:30 p.m.
PRESENT:
Dr. Duane Orn, Wallace Bernards, Phil Cohen, Jeff Delzer, Lani Delzer, Keith Lester, Sharon
Kephart, Pastor Bruce Hobbs, Councilmember Kay Lasman, City Manager Curt Boganey, Sue
Low and Sue LaCrosse
The committee changed the start time of future meetings to 5:00 p.m.
Sharon Kephart reported she can get Go Red pins for the whole community.
Phil Cohen will meet with Jerry Pedlar at North Memorial to see how they could get involved.
He would like Keith Lester to give him some information so he can make a reasonable request.
Keith Lester requested a meeting with Dr. Orn, Jerry Pedlar and Phil Cohen. Keith Lester will
make a contact with Park Nicollet.
Jeff Delzer said he talked to Myrna Kauth to see if someone in Brooklyn Center is eligible for the
Purple Heart. Keith Lester said the Veteran’s Affair office can send out email blasts to advertise
our Veteran events. Keith will contact Myrna Kauth.
City Manager Curt Boganey contacted Circus Juventas. He said they do this type of thing and he
will follow up with specific costs. He reported we are an eligible group to request the Air Force
Band. We would have to cover their expenses. Osseo had a military reserve band in their parade.
Someone from Osseo will get back to Curt Boganey as to how they were able to get them. He
sent an email to the U of M band to see if they are interested or available. He will follow up with
the Minneapolis Police Band as another option.
City Manager Curt Boganey reported that he spoke with Monique Drier. The multi cultural
advisory committee probably will not be able to take on the task of planning and organizing an
International or Heritage Fair.
Phil Cohen reported he picked up some commemorative coins at Viking Trophy. We can get 500
for 2.34/each. The Pewter coins would cost $5.00/coin. He will report more details at a future
meeting.
The committee decided they would like to see a Taste of Brooklyn Center event. We need
someone to coordinate it. Jeff Delzer will contact City Manager Curt Boganey with the name of
the person who coordinated a similar event for CEAP. City Manager Curt Boganey said he will
make the contact. Mayor Tim Willson suggested a discount night at restaurants in Brooklyn
Center. City Manager Curt Boganey suggested the Hennepin Tech College.
Sue LaCrosse said as part of Holly Weekend, we would like to see a better lighting out front of

the Civic Center. Sue Low said in one community they have different groups come in to set up
and light a section of the park. Jeff Delzer suggested a home lighting contest.
Jeff Delzer suggested involving CEAP throughout the year.

Wallace Bernards said BCHS will be celebrating their 50 anniversary next year. He sais he has a
meeting soon and will have details of when, where, how much etc. It looks like this event would
be held in June, September or October.
City Manager Curt Boganey said the issue was raised to give opportunity for all schools to
participate. Phil Cohen said St. Paul has an annual school parade for their school patrols. The
students march over to a park where they are treated to a picnic lunch.
Wallace Bernards said there is National School Week in October. We may want to tie in
something with that.
Sharon Kephart talked about the President Service Award, which could be given out to
volunteers.
There was a suggestion to sell hotdogs at Cub Foods as a fundraiser.
Phil Cohen asked Sue LaCrosse to call the fireworks company to find out the minimum amount of
money we would need to have a fireworks show in December as our finale event.
