BROOKLYN CENTER
CENTENNIAL CELEBRATION COMMITTEE
WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 18, 2010, 5:30 PM
MEETING NOTES
Keith Lester called the Centennial Celebration Committee meeting to order at 5:30 p.m.
PRESENT:
Keith Lester, Sharon Kephart, Brent Haugen, Jeff Delzer, Lanny Delzer, Councilmember Kay
Lasman, Councilmember Dan Ryan, Joy Reinhart, Phil Cohen, Dr. Duane Orn, Janis Blumethal,
Robert Marvin, City Manager Curt Boganey, Brett Hildreth, Chuck Datko, Sue Low and Sue
LaCrosse.
Dr. Duane Orn introduced Janis Blumethal. Dr. Duane Orn said we are thinking of building a band
shell and asked Janis if he would be interested in helping. He would be willing to design it up to the
mechanical/electrical part.
Janis Blumethal is very interested in being part of this venture. He would need a lot of client input,
what we would want to spend and what it would be used for. He would design and provide a
rendering so everyone gets an idea of what it could look like. He said there would need to be
agreement on what it should look like. Then he would prepare a construction estimate of what it
would cost to build. He would do preliminary design work pro bono. He distributed a booklet of
examples of band shells.
Phil Cohen asked “does this excite anyone to donate”. He said it should have a theme and asked
where it would be located. Based on the message this structure is going to convey, where should it
be located for best purposes? He said the name should be something that would attract people to
contribute. He suggested the “Civic and Veterans Memorial Amphitheater” as an idea. Phil Cohen
has talked to former mayor Myrna Kauth about doing a veteran’s memorial. The memorial could also
include the memory of organizations that built this community, such as the Jaycee’s and Lions.
Pavers, bricks or some type of engraved wall were discussed. If someone donates, they or their
company would be identified.
City Manager Curt Boganey reported the Council has endorsed the concept at Central Park and has
asked the Parks & Recreation Commission to weigh in on the appropriate location and to get their
input. It would probably be advantageous for the Parks & Recreation Commission to get some
feedback from the architect. Dr. Duane Orn, Robert Marvin, Janis Blumethal, and Keith Lester will
attend the September Parks & Recreation Commission meeting.
There was a motion by Dr. Duane Orn, seconded by Phil Cohen to approve Janis Blumethal to go
ahead with band shell designs. City Manager Curt Boganey said it would be helpful to have
something in writing of what the scope of Blumethal’s services will be. Motion carried.
Jeff Delzer reported Earle Brown was instrumental in training pilots for the military. He would like to
get aviation involved in the Earle Brown Days celebration or the Centennial depending on the
schedule. They do air shows and flyovers. Basically they request money for the cost of the fuel.
Chuck Datko said they do it because they love it. He asked when we were thinking of doing it?
1
One idea would be to have this activity during Earle Brown Days There is a veteran’s program
already scheduled from 8-9 p.m. Chuck Datko said they fly out of Anoka, Crystal and other airports.
The cost is the same regardless of where they come from. The cost is $300/plane, which is paid after
the event. There would be no cost if they could not fly out. The company carries liability insurance
and can name the City as additional insured. Keith Lester said this is another area we would add to
our fundraising efforts. The committee decided they would like to proceed with this.
Robert Marvin reported that Chinese New Year starts February 14 and is a 15 day event. An event
should be done during that 15 day period. Robert Marvin said a paper drive won’t cost anything.
They will pick up and drop off the semi. Municipal paper drives do better if it does every three
months. He doesn’t have the price per ton yet, but said $40 a ton is the best we can expect to get.
The price of recycled paper is going down. The container would be onsite. This would be a great
thing to get kids involved. They don’t want magazines.
Joy Reinhart facilitated the events agenda item.
June
She reported that at the Earle Brown Days meeting three options were discussed for next year’s
festival. The committee decided on option 1 but would skip Monday. Tuesday may be senior day
with the Rockin’ Hollywoods, senior coronation, a dog walk and maybe the Senior Golf Tournament
could be moved to this day. For Wednesday a car show in conjunction with Oak City or Luther
Autos, a concert, cultural event, BC Idol contest or Brooklyn Center’s Got Talent was discussed.
Thursday is parade day and we may have something in the community center pool. Dunkin’s
Birthday Party, a teen night or battle of the bands was suggested for Friday. Friday would be kid’s
day. Saturday would be family day. Joy Reinhart is going to make some contacts for a fun run. She
said Earle Brown Days committee members volunteered to check costs.
City Manager Curt Boganey said the City of Osseo has a band festival. This year they hadthe USMC
.
Marine Forces Reserve BandThis might be an idea for our parade. Robert Marvin suggested
booking the singer from National Night Out. We are asking the highway patrol to be involved with
the parade next year. Joy Reinhart is going to make the contact. The highway patrol also has a
helicopter. The University of Minnesota Marching Band was suggested.
Joy Reinhart said an Art show during Earle Brown Days was suggested but she has concerns because
there are weather and security issues. If the Centennial committee decides to do it, maybe we find
another venue, such as the library. Jeff Delzer suggested a food drive for Saturday. Maybe taco bell
would give coupons for those donating food.
City Manager Curt Boganey suggested Circus Juventas. The committee discussed inviting a carnival.
Phil Cohen said carnival people want to have their carnival where they can have a lot of exposure;
th
they want to be where traffic is. You are going to need personnel to coordinate. 57 & Logan
Avenues were suggested but there is no parking.
Brett Hildreth would like to see an International celebration held during some month.
July
This may be the month for the international event, taste of Brooklyn Center along with some other
2
cultural related activities. Different cultures would be invited to showcase arts, foods, and
entertainment. City Manager Curt Boganey suggested inviting Surley Brewery for a beer festival.
Maybe other micro breweries could be invited to come out to the park too and it could be called
Micro Brewery Beer Fest. It would be nice to have entertainment along with the beer festival.
Fashion show.
Sharon Kephart said it is important to recognize volunteers. One type of recognition is the President
Service award. She suggested having a volunteer month.
