HomeMy WebLinkAbout2010 03-03 CCCM BROOKLYN CENTER CENTENNIAL CELEBRATION COMMITTEE TUESDAY, MARCH 3, 2010, 5:30 PM MEETING NOTES Keith Lester, Centennial Chairman called the Centennial Celebration Committee meeting to order at 5:30 p.m. PRESENT: Keith Lester, Phil Cohen, Sue Low, Sharon Kephart, Councilmember Dan Ryan, Brett Hildreth, Dr. Duane Orn, Dave Looby, Margaret Sandberg, Joy Reinhart, and Sue LaCrosse. COMMITTEE RECRUITMENT The committee went down the list of potential working group members. Many of them have not been contacted yet. The committee identified individuals who they thought would fit into the various working groups. Keith Lester will contact potential chairs. Tourism & Marketing Working Group - Potential Members Chair Dave Looby or Brett Hildreth. Members - Gena Johnston, Teresa, Sue Low, 3 BCHS students. Special Events Working Group - Potential Members Chair Tony Kuefler. Members - Joy Reinhart, Margaret Sandberg, Sue LaCrosse. Community Working Group - Potential Members Chair Brett Hildreth. Members - Jean Schiebel, Dorothy Jacobson, Lucy Paguio, Fire Department, Police Department (Becky Boie). Cultural Working Group - Potential Members Chair Pastor Bruce Hobbs. Members - Hopefully Monique Drier will identify some individuals. Historical Working Group - Potential Members Chair Warren Olson. Members - Tom Shinnick, Earl Simons, Ernee McArthur, Dean Nyquist, Phil Cohen, Bill Haynie. TIMELINE April 15 - Committees formed; contact businesses. End of June - Plans received from working groups; set budget. SPECIAL EVENT IDEAS Margaret Sandberg said she is involved with the Brooklyn Center Birthday Party and this may be the first event of the Centennial. She suggested the following for possible events - National Night Out, CEAP Toy Breakfast, a historical wedding dress show and Citizens for Better Government reunion. She said there is a Market Fest in White Bear Lake. Many of the restaurants set up in Town’s Square and sell simple food. Later in the summer they have vendors who sell flowers and vegetables. She suggested this might work to bring people to the park. In Elk River they do 1,000 Random Acts of Kindness. Roseville features a restaurant of the week. Phil Cohen suggested a tour of Mound Cemetery. 1 Brett Hildreth suggested adding some tangible goals. Phil Cohen said there may be opportunity to solicit people to be involved at the Lion’s breakfast at Applebees and the school district retirees’ function. We need a project plan before fundraising. When fundraising does begin, there would be a script to follow. th A 100 Anniversary booklet was suggested. Possible companies to work with for a booklet include Prime Advertising, the Star Tribune, and the Sun Post. The book could be created and attached to a calendar. Keith Lester said this needs to be a first class production. Brett Hildreth suggested tying branding to the City. Keith Lester said he wants people to feel appreciation, communication should be big, and every person on every committee is committed. PROMOTIONAL ITEMS Sue Low and Keith Lester discussed the various t-shirts, sweatshirts, caps, and pens available for purchase. Keith Lester and Sue Low will decide what merchandise and how much to order based on the budget. MEETING SCHEDULE March 17, 31, April 14, 28, May 12 & 26, 5:30 p.m. in room 221 of the Community Center.
