BROOKLYN CENTER
CENTENNIAL CELEBRATION COMMITTEE
TUESDAY, MARCH 17, 2010, 5:30 PM
MEETING NOTES
Sue Low called the Centennial Celebration Committee meeting to order at 5:30 p.m.
PRESENT:
Sue Low, Sharon Kephart, Brett Hildreth, Margaret Sandberg, City Manager Curt Boganey, Wally
Osman, and Sue LaCrosse.
WORKING GROUPS
Not much has changed regarding the working groups. Many people still need to be contacted. Sue
Low will ask Dave Looby to serve on and perhaps chair the Tourism & Marketing Group.
City Manager, Curt Boganey reported there will be banners on 60-80 poles along Xerxes and Bass
Lake Road. If the Centennial Committee wanted to have some changed to a Centennial banner next
year, there would be a cost of the banners. The cost of switching them could maybe be absorbed by
the City.
GOALS
1. Establish an action plan and budget for a year-long preparation for the Centennial Year
Celebration and Activities.
2. Cooperate with businesses, educational institutions, churches and community organizations to
incorporate their existing events and activities into an overall plan that focuses on the theme and
program for the Centennial.
3. A celebration that reflects the participation and ideas of the entire community.
4. Recognize the pioneers who built Brooklyn Center, the individuals who sacrificed for our City and
country and the diversity which has contributed to the richness of our community.
5. Emphasize the positive image of Brooklyn Center to the community and the broader community.
6. Teach knowledge to the next generation including youth and new residents to the community.
7. 100 events.
8. Imagine the future - how do you do this tactically. Have as a vision to inspire continued greatness
and pride.
Brett Hildreth suggested linking the intangible goals with the tactical ones.
WEBSITE/BRANDING
Sue LaCrosse reported that she and Keith Lester met with Vickie Schleuning about the website.
Vickie has a call into Gov Office, the software company. We will be having a Centennial web page
and hopefully the home page will be enhanced a little reflecting the Centennial.
City Manager, Curt Boganey said to go ahead with the Centennial logo. The City uses Brooklyn
Center - A great place to start, a great place to stay.
City Manager, Curt Boganey suggested doing something that would be developed in the future such
as an amphitheater or fiber optic link. Brett Hildreth suggested a global village/market vision or
1
embracing technology and partner with a company such as Google. Margaret Sandberg said she
reported at the last meeting that White Bear Lake has a Marketfest every week. She thought it would
be a nice addition to the Tuesday concerts.
The committee discussed the clings and decided they had too much information. It was suggested we
keep the logo and only have Brooklyn Center Centennial 2011 on them.
BUDGET/FINANCE PLANNING
City Manager, Curt Boganey said the tactical decision takes place after goal setting. What are we
trying to achieve and how much is it going to cost? Resolving outcome #2 is critical. The best way
to develop a financial plan based on goals is at the level of the smaller working groups. The groups
need to be established, they need to be specific of what they want and then they can generate the
costs. The broader goals would be at the committee level.
City Manager, Curt Boganey said he talked to the city manager of Eagan. They are celebrating
150 years and are doing a food drive to collect 150,000 pounds for the food shelf. He said it has
really galvanized the community. The staff member working with the celebration is Diane Miller.
Brett Hildreth suggested a goal of green.
Margaret Sandberg again reported on the Elk River 1,000 Random Acts of Kindness and the
Roseville Restaurant of the Week.
MEETING SCHEDULE
March 31, April 14, 28, May 12 & 26, 5:30 p.m. in room 221 of the Community Center.
