BROOKLYN CENTER
CENTENNIAL CELEBRATION COMMITTEE
TUESDAY, MARCH 31, 2010, 5:30 PM
MEETING NOTES
Keith Lester called the Centennial Celebration Committee meeting to order at 5:30 p.m.
PRESENT:
Keith Lester, Dave Looby, Sue Low, Sharon Kephart, Brett Hildreth, Dr. Duane Orn,
Councilmember Dan Ryan, Phil Cohen and Sue LaCrosse.
WORKING GROUPS
Keith Lester said that contacts need to be made. Phil Cohen said we need to develop materials to
hype to the various civic groups. We need to emphasize that we #1 need your money and #2 we need
your help. Keith Lester said we need to find out who the civic groups are and when they meet.
Councilmember Dan Ryan said the fire department will be having their annual dinner shortly. He
could suggest the mayor give a pitch. The information should be included in the City Newsletter,
churches, Channel 12 and the Sun Post. Councilmember Ryan said the meetings in the parks will be
starting shortly. Keith Lester said we should put together a presentation. Dave Looby said we
should standardize the message.
It was suggested we get a banner or tabletop sign to bring with us when presentations are made.
Dave Looby suggested contacting Channel 11 to see if they would have their Health Fair in Brooklyn
Center.
Dr. Orn suggested going global and going from red to green.
Once the presentation is done, Councilmember Dan Ryan would recommend it be a work session item
for the Council.
BRAINSTORMING IDEAS
The committee is interested in finding out what image the City wants to promote. They would like to
meet with some City staff to discuss. Sue LaCrosse said she would contact the City Manager to find
out how to proceed with this. The committee brainstormed these ideas as possible images to portray:
Hardworking City
Future Global Village
Heart of North America
Global Destination
Gateway
The Next Global Village
A rural atmosphere in an urban setting
Reinforce small town image
Brooklyn Center equals home
Cultural Diversity - World Leaders
What’s good - great park system, great events, fireworks, new hotel, and destination points - Luther
Auto & Earle Brown Heritage Center

Brett Hildreth suggested the artwork support the City’s image. Dave Looby suggested putting a
large skyscraper in the background with cupola in front with a globe. Phil Cohen asked if the Earle
Brown Heritage Center can display Centennial information in their lobby and in some rooms. It is a
destination point in Brooklyn Center and it attracts people from all over. Dave Looby said in one
city, the mayor gets six dates at their center to use for events. It was suggested that the Centennial be
put on the water towers.
Keith Lester said we
1. Need more bodies to help, those with experience and knowledge.
2. What is the image we are going to promote?
