BROOKLYN CENTER
CENTENNIAL CELEBRATION COMMITTEE
TUESDAY, MAY 12, 2010, 5:30 PM
MEETING NOTES
Keith Lester called the Centennial Celebration Committee meeting to order at 5:30 p.m.
PRESENT:
Keith Lester, Sharon Kephart, Dr. Duane Orn, Phil Cohen, Becky Boie, Wallace Bernards, Warren
Olson and Sue LaCrosse.
WORKING GROUPS
Keith Lester met with a couple of the work groups. It didn’t go as well as expected. Only a couple
people showed up.
EVENTS
Keith Lester said we need to have a baseline of events. He also hopes to have a big event, which will
depend on the budget.
Existing events

100 Brooklyn Center Birthday Party, Earle Brown Days, National Night Out, National Night Out
Kickoff, Holly Sunday, Dudley Softball Tournament, Arbor Day, Great Watershed Cleanup, Earth
Fest, Community Health Fair, Evenings in the Park, Kids’ Halloween Party, Heritage Festival?,
Brooklyn Center Prayer Breakfast, Lioness Fashion Show, Lions Pancake/Waffle Breakfasts &
Spaghetti dinner.
Possible new events
1. Becky Boie reported that the National Night Out Committee would like to do a Historical Trivia
Competition with the neighborhood watch groups. Their goal is to increase the number of watch
groups and make it fun. They will come up with a set of history questions or maybe hide a medallion.
There would be some type of reward and it would be presented at the National Night Out Kickoff
event.

2. Brooklyn Center High School Open House - 50 anniversary of the opening of BCHS. We may
want to check to see if Park Center High School has a big anniversary coming up too.
3. Kathy Mattea Concert Fundraiser
4. Black History Month
5. Time Capsule - we will need to decide when we want to unveil the contents of the time capsule
from 25 years ago and if we want to do a new one.
6. Easter Egg Hunt at EBHC.
7. Music of the different eras as part of the concerts in the park.
8. Teen event.
9. Wedding Dress Fashion Show - Margaret Sandberg would coordinate this event.
10. Evergreen Elementary - Earl Simons would be a good person to make a contact at Evergreen.
11. Northport Elementary - Margaret Sandberg would be a good person to make a contact at
Northport.
12. Wellness Week.
13. Tour of Mound Cemetery - contact Jim Dehn.

14. All day Brooklyn Center Birthday Party on February 5, 2011 for the whole community.
FUNDRAISING
Keith Lester said we need individual budgets and need to set a target amount. Ideas for fundraising
included: Cub Foods, Caribou Coffee, Surley Brewery, Bingo night, BC American Legion, North
Memorial, Grant from State Historical Society, online auction, contact former BC residents who have
deep pockets, coupon book, Medtronic, Target, Engdahl Foundation, sell handprints in cement/bricks
as a legacy, Tim Laudner, Lions Club, Rotary Club, Luther Autos, donate aluminum can drive, print
calendars, Applebees Fundraiser.
Keith Lester asked Warren Olson to check to see what we need to do to use historical pictures and
items in the Historical Society books.
MEETING SCHEDULE
Next meeting is May 26, 5:30 p.m. in room 221 of the Community Center.
