BROOKLYN CENTER
CENTENNIAL CELEBRATION COMMITTEE
TUESDAY, MAY 26, 2010, 5:30 PM
MEETING NOTES
Keith Lester called the Centennial Celebration Committee meeting to order at 5:30 p.m.
PRESENT:
Keith Lester, Sharon Kephart, Dr. Duane Orn, Mayor Tim Willson, City Manager Curt Boganey,
Brett Hildreth and Sue LaCrosse.
TOURISM & MARKETING UPDATE
Keith Lester reported the Tourism & Marketing work group met for about three hours on a Saturday
to talk about marketing. Most of the time was spent working on the website. He said the group also
talked about mesh signs and banners for the light poles. He said Centennial committee members have
made three contacts to the Historical Society. He said they never returned his phone call. Sharon
Kephart recommended we send their board an official letter requesting information and laying out
how it would be beneficial to both organizations. Keith Lester said he is working on a marketing plan
for the Centennial.
FUNDRAISING
Keith Lester said he has a cousin who has raised millions of dollars. He would be happy to train the
committee how to fundraise. City Manager Curt Boganey also knows a professional fundraiser.
Keith Lester believes the job of fundraising should be part of the main committee. He said we need to
put a strategy together. Dr. Orn said it would be great to get a major donor as a kickoff to the
fundraising plan. It was decided we should put together a menu of possible things that could be
sponsored. Mayor Tim Willson said he would help with fundraising. We will try to set up fundraising
training for our next meeting. There have been a lot of people who have left Brooklyn Center and
have gone on to big things. Maybe we should try to find them and invite them to help.
Dr. Orn said he recently attended an event in Plymouth. They have a beautiful garden. He suggested
the Centennial Celebration think about this idea. This could maybe be our legacy project. We might
be able to sell bricks for the platform. Maybe we could apply for a grant from the MN Historical
Society to build an amphitheater along with the garden. We could invite people to be part of the
Centennial garden. It might be a place to put the time capsule.
NEXT MEETING
Next meeting is June 9, 5:30 p.m. in room 221 of the Community Center.
ADJOURNMENT
The meeting was adjourned.
Respectfully Submitted,
Sue LaCrosse
