Adjournment MINUTES OF THE PROCEEDINGS OF THE HOUSING COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF BROOKLYN CENTER IN THE COUNTY OF HENNEPIN AND STATE OF MINNESOTA REGULAR SESSION SEPTEMBER 17, 2013 COUNCIL COMMISSION ROOM CALL TO ORDER The Brooklyn Center Housing Commission was called to order by Chairperson Thorbus at 7:05 p.m. ROLL CALL Chairperson-Judy Thorbus,Kathie Amdahl,Ephraim Olani,David Johnson,Peggy Lynn,and Leroy Houston. Also present was Administrative Assistant Linnea Graffunder-Bartels,Council Liaison Lin Myszkowski. Staff Liaison Jesse Anderson was absent and excused. APPROVAL OFAGENDA There was a motion to approve the agenda as submitted. The motion passed. APPROVAL OFMINUTES—AUGUST20, 2013 There was a motion to approve the minutes of the Housing Commission meeting on August 20, 2013 as amended. The motion passed. CHAIRPERSONS REPORT Chairperson Thorbus reported that the Sun Post recently ran an article discussing a possible senior housing development at the Cars for Heart site off of Brooklyn Boulevard. Commissioner Lynn asked what would happen at the site.Commissioner Amdahl asked how traffic would enter the site. Chairperson Thorbus stated that the commission would have to ask Staff Liaison Jesse Anderson about the redevelopment plans at the next meeting. Chairperson Thorbus also noted that the Sun Post ran an article about the upcoming rezoning of several empty residential lots on either 69th Ave or 65th Ave. Chairperson Thorbus was unsure ofthe exact address and asked what the rezoned lots would be used for. She stated that the commission would have to ask Staff Liaison Jesse Anderson about the redevelopment plans at the next meeting. Chairperson Thorbus recognized Brooklyn Center Cub Foods employee Dana Anderson for donating the bags for the New Neighborhood Welcome bag program. She noted that Mr.Anderson supplied the bags even when he was unable to get the cub logo printed on the bags beforehand and so forwent any advertising potential he may have gained by the donation. Chairperson Thorbus stated that Mr. Anderson would be recognized by the Housing Commission with a thank-you note in the Sun Post. COUNCIL LIAISON REPORT Page 1 9-17-13 In the absence of the Council Liaison, no report was submitted. OTHER BUSINESS Commissioner Amdahl reported that the Housing Commission had delivered 187 new neighbor welcome bags year-to-date. 104 of these deliveries included contact with the new resident and only three properties were found to be vacant at the time of delivery. Commissioner Lynn stated that some new residents were leery of the Commission's bag delivery as they expected that the Commissioners were door-to-door salespeople. Chairperson Thorbus asked about the next bag delivery date and stated that there is only one more scheduled delivery date. Commissioner Amdahl stated that the sun is setting sooner now so possible the evening delivery time should be reconsidered. Commissioner Lynn asked if any of the delivery spots were located in the Lions Park area and offered to deliver those bags herself during the week. Chairperson Thorbus responded that the Housing Commissioners should not deliver bags alone. Commissioner Amdahl suggested that a Saturday morning delivery date might work well. She mentioned that the Commission had done Saturday deliveries in the past. Commissioner Amdahl suggested October 5th from 10-Noon as a Saturday delivery date. Commissioner Johnson agreed. Commissioner Lynn and Chairperson Thorbus said they were unable to attend. Commissioner Amdahl suggested that Wednesday, September 25th at 5:45 PM-7PM would be a second delivery date. Commissioners Amdahl, Houston, and Chairperson Thorbus will attend. Commissioner Johnson stated he was unable to attend that date. Chairperson Thorbus asked if Councilmembers Kleven and Myszkowski might be able to help deliver bags as well. Commissioner Johnson asked about the move-in dates of the houses that have/will receive new neighbor bags this year. Commissioner Amdahl reported that the move-in dates were between May and August of 2013. Commissioner Olani asked for clarification about the time period. Commissioner Amdahl stated that 360 new homeowners have moved to Brooklyn Center in that time period. Commissioner Lynn asked about any other upcoming events for Council and Commission members. Chairperson Thorbus reported that there are no upcoming events that she is aware of. Chairperson Thorbus stated Council Liaison Myszkowski offered in the past to schedule a tour of CEAP and the Northwest Family Service Center for the Housing Commission members. Chairperson Thorbus stated that she would ask Council Liaison Myszkowski about this possibility for the future.
