COMMITTEE REPORTS
Budget/Finance:
An updated spreadsheet was distributed.
Craft & Business Expo:
Joy Reinhart reported the show went the easiest of any other year. An
extra ice cream vendor showed up. They left after the Police Chief said he would send over an
inspector. The food vendors did really well.
Kids’ Craft Area:
All the craft projects were used. The kids were very excited with their puppets.
Family Fun & Games:
Cathy Ballot said there were about 400 people. It went good. They were
worried about running out of water balloons.
Golf Tournament:
Mike Meyer said the morning had more golfers. Overall, there were more golfers
than last year. They have some new ideas for next year.
Honor Our Veterans:
Myrna Kauth said it went good. They had 14 WWII Veterans. The music
was great. The Jeep was there and everyone loved seeing that. Joy Reinhart made a video of it and
invited those who wanted to stay to view it. Sue LaCrosse will check to see if the City’s IT department
can finalize the disk and make an additional copy. Joy Reinhart said we need to coordinate the picture
taking with the video taping.
Kids’ Fishing Contest:
It was reported the kids caught a lot of fish and were excited.
Music/Fireworks:
The fireworks were good. Phil Cohen said they lasted 12 minutes and he thought
1
that people were waiting for more. There was not a good crowd for the music.
Parade:
Mike Meyer said the BC police emergency vehicle started out the parade by throwing
candy from the vehicle. Odyssey forgot to set out an extension cord. Park Center gave extra
performances. There was no congregation of kids at the start of the parade this year. We need a sign
that says end of parade. Myrna Kauth said it was difficult for some parade units because they are facing
the sun as they walk.
Petting Zoo:
Good. It would be nice if we could have them for a longer period of time.
Publicity:
No report.
OLD BUSINESS:
None.
NEW BUSINESS:
Mike Meyer gave Chairperson Joy Reinhart his letter of resignation. He said there will be four people
assigned to chair the parade. Judy and Phil are anticipated to attend the meetings. There was a motion
by Phil Cohen, seconded by Councilmember Lin Myszkowski to accept Mike Meyer’s resignation from
the Earle Brown Days Board of Directors and thank him for his outstanding service. Motion carried.
Phil Cohen said he wanted to commend Rick Nelson and Dave Valker for the fabulous job they did. He
added it wouldn’t work without the City staff.
EARLE BROWN DAYS FUTURE
Cathy Ballot reported we will have a beginning checkbook balance of $9,361.28 for next year.
Options:
1.Continue until money runs out
2.Scale back
a.No parade
b.No craft & business expo
c.Eliminate fireworks
d.Eliminate music (poor attendance)
Issues:
1.Centennial pursued EB sponsors regardless of agreement
2.Committee small
3.Sun Post
4.a. Based on conversation with Medtronic, they will sponsor again
b. May not be able to count on Jerry’s Cub Foods
c. Does the City want a festival?
Joy Reinhart reported that the Craft & Business vendors had name tags that identified them as an
exhibitor. She suggests we may want to have name tags for sponsors saying something like “Proud
Sponsor of Earle Brown Days”.
Myrna Kauth would like Hennepin County Medical Center know that their funds went to support the
Honor the Veterans Program and asked that a picture of the Veterans be sent to them.
Karen Youngberg said we need to contact more businesses to donate.
Phil Cohen said the Craft & Business Expo makes money. He doesn’t understand why we would want
2
to eliminate that event. He said maybe we should expand it. Joy Reinhart said it is very labor intensive.
She goes out to many shows throughout the year, not to buy things, but to scope out the items and pick
up business cards of potential vendors. Sue LaCrosse said it might be difficult to expand because we are
accommodating everyone who meets the criteria and wants to be in the show. If we want to expand to
chiropractors, siding companies, and insurance companies we might get more but lose some of the other
exhibitors. She said it is a labor intensive event for her too. She added Cathy Ballot goes out to a lot of
other shows picking up business cards.
Phil Cohen said our signature events are the parade, fireworks and Saturday in the Park.
Mike Meyer said he plans to send out a letter to the bands asking them if they would still participate if
we eliminated the band judges. He said this is a big chunk of the budget. He said if we eliminated the
band judges, the Lions Club would be able to sponsor the cost of the parade for the next five years.
Sue LaCrosse said we may want to consider eliminating the Craft & Business Expo and concentrate on
children and family events for Saturday.
Joy Reinhart asked the committee if we can walk away and come back in September and actively make
some decisions. The committee said yes.
