Adjournment • 1 Earle Brown Days Brooklyn Center Minnesota 301 Shingle Creek Parkway 55430 (612)569-3400 Earle Brown Days Meeting Minutes February 11, 1992 PRESENT: Kragness, Bergeland, Roen, Nerburn, Graham, Cohen, Risley, Neilson Mary Fandre y, Sharon Knutson and LaCrosse. The meeting was called to order at 7 : 39 a.m. APPROVAL OF MINUTES: There was a motion by Cohen, seconded by Bergeland to approve the minutes of January, 14 , 1992 . Motion carried. AMBASSADORS: Cohen reported that his committee will do the same as last year. He will update the mailing list and needs the City' s current vendor list. The committee will try to concentrate their efforts on donations of $100 and up to make it worthwhile. • Bergeland suggested starting with the those who donated big last year. Cohen will first put together a general budget to see how much they need to raise to keep the balance at about $5, 000 . BARN DANCE: Kragness said a children's group called Best Buddies is secured for the first 45 minutes of the dance. No other commitments have been made. A possibility is the back up band for Marilyn Sellers. Neilson brought some tapes of music groups for Kragness as possible entertainment for the barn dance. CAR SHOW: The club has printed their flyers. Cohen said he will not solicit the car dealers. Nerburn will contact auto stores and car dealers. Kragness asked who the club was and Nerburn said it is the Minnesota Street Machine Association. CRAFT FAIR: Bergeland asked if we should keep the craft fair open until 8 p.m. friday to tie in with the start of the barn dance. The committee felt that was a good idea. LaCrosse said she will place an ad in the Star Tribune asking for exhibitors. Bergeland said she would like to contact the craft and fabric stores about putting up posters or flyers to advertise for exhibitors. She said she will ask Kathy Flesher for her exhibitor list. It was also suggested we contact Brooklyn Park Recreation Dept. to see if we can hand out information to their exhibitors in the spring show. ICE CREAM SOCIAL: Kragness said she talked to Lori Bonnen of Brookdale. They want to continue the ice cream social . Both ice cream companies are interested. It is also Brookdale' s 30th anniversary. LaCrosse asked if they planned to use the community band. Kragness said yes. LaCrosse said she has already asked them to hold the date for this event. JUNIOR ROYALTY: Graham reported the flyers and applications will be out to the schools by April 1 to be turned in by mid May. She said the application fee will be due at the orientation meeting rather than turned in with the application. Kragness said she would like a list of the candidates and the number of people who participate. Graham said she would give her a report. Graham said it was the junior royalty' s fifth anniversary and she hopes to get the children from past years involved too. FISHING CONTEST: LaCrosse said that Tom Zenanko sold his Sportsman' s Press but is still interested in hosting the fishing contest. With his contacts, he will be able to get many prizes. He may be interested in driving his boat in the parade. PICNIC/GAMES: Cohen passed out a proposal faxed to him by Dorff. The proposal included games, budget, awards, committee, and supplies needed. Dorff' s proposal is for Rotary to sponsor the event at a cost of $500. Cohen will take this proposal to Rotary. There was a motion by Bergeland, seconded by Nerburn to approve the concept of the picnic/games and to coordinate a good date and time with LaCrosse. Motion carried. • FOOD VENDORS: LaCrosse introduced Mary Fandrey from the health department and Sharon Knutson from the city manager' s office. Fandrey said we really try to convey to vendors exactly what we expect of them. There are problems with two vendors in particular. She met with the City attorney to see if they can be excluded from future events. Bergeland said we will not send them an application because the vendors must first be approved by the EBD parade, craft fair, or car show committees before they can apply for a license. Nerburn said the car club is not obligated to invite the same vendor they have used in the past. He will express our concerns to the car club. Fandrey passed out the guidelines they go over with the vendors because all food vendors do not automatically receive a license. Knutson passed out a memo listing the guidelines for applying for a license. A list of authorized food vendors must be received to her by June 1. Vendors must use the official licensing forms provided by the City. Knutson must receive the applications by June 5 and any applications received after June 19 will not be processed. The license fees as set by the city manager are: parade - exempt; craft fair - $25 ; and car show - $30 . Risley said they are really going to crack down on unauthorized vendors at the parade. Knutson suggested giving little flags to the authorized vendors to hang. Risley thought this was an excellent idea and will get some flags or banners made up. PARADE: Risley reported this year' s grand marshal will be Jim Lindsey, Police Chief. He will be retiring this year. It is also the 75th anniversary of the Lions International and there will be floats, clowns and a variety of other units from Lions clubs all over the area. Kragness asked Risley if any units were paid for coming because Brooklyn Park Tater Daze voted this year not to pay anyone to be in the parade. Risley said about a half dozen units were paid last year and they will probably do that again. PUBLICITY: LaCrosse reported the front page of the summer City Manager' s newsletter will feature Earle Brown Days complete with pictures. SUNDAY IN CENTRAL PARK: LaCrosse said the entertainment groups are set. Program will start at 7 p.m. TALENT CONTEST: Neilson said Brookdale took out their stage and the talent contest cannot be held there. Brooklyn Center High School will be under construction. He reported that we can use the outdoor bandwagon and Constitution Hall as a backup in case of rain. LaCrosse suggested the following dates for the contest Wednesday, June 17 ; Thursday, June 18 ; and Monday, June 22 . Monday, June 15 would be used only if needed. OLD BUSINESS: None NEW BUSINESS: Kragness said we have one bill to pay. There was a motion by Graham, seconded by Nerburn to approve for payment the bill to American Speedy Print for $180. 85 for letterhead and envelopes. Motion carried. Kragness asked if either Jerry Low or Jack Flatley had been contacted about serving on the board. Neilson said Jerry Low is too busy and will be serving as Rotary president next year. Neilson said he will talk to Jack Flatley at the February 11 Rotary meeting. ADJOURN: The meeting was adjourned at 8 : 50 a.m. NEXT MEETING: TUESDAY, MARCH 10, 7 : 30 A.M. Respectfully Submitted, Sue LaCrosse City Liaison
