Earle Brown Days Brooklyn Center Minnesota 6301 Shingle Creek Parkway 55430 (612) 561-5440 Earle Brown Days Meeting Minutes July 16, 1990 City Hall THOSE PRESENT: Benson, Jacobson, Dorff, Bergeland, Cohen, Roen, Neilson, Cummings, and LaCrosse. FINANCIAL REPORT: Bergeland passed out the budget sheets. The first was prepared before Earle Brown Days was held for the benefit of the Rotary Club. The anticipated budget deficit at this time was $3 , 813 . The other sheet, prepared after Earle Brown Days, shows a deficit of $1, 928 . 70. Cummings reported a balance of $1, 578 . 50 as of 7/16/90 . Bergeland reported bills of $2 , 540. 71 . BFI $649 . 00 for Port-a-pots City of Brooklyn Center 33 . 00 postage-June Abe Benson 184 . 71 streamers, helium, candy, phone calls, balloons. • North Suburban Radio 150 . 00 15 spots-craft fair Waste Management 473 . 00 Dumpsters Star Tribune 138 . 00 Advertising-craft show Brooklyn Center Hockey 750 . 00 Cleanup Cohen made a motion to pay all bills except BFI and Waste Management. Seconded by Dorff. Motion carried. There will also be a bill from the Post for the ad about the craft fair. TALENT SHOW: Neilson said Brookdale was extremely cooperative. He said we need to send out applications a couple weeks earlier and he sees it as a growing event. It should make money. Nielsen will chair again. STREET DANCE: Jacobson reported that everything was against the dance. It rained at 8 p.m. The band didn't start playing until 9 : 30 p.m. Neilson said he would like to negotiate the contract with the band. Cohen made a motion to continue the street dance in 191, move it to City Hall and have Neilson negotiate a contract with a band. Seconded by Benson. Motion carried. s ANTIQUE SHOW: Antique Show coordinator still owes Earle Brown Days $500. Bergeland will try to get it. Jacobson would like to see a contract developed that we can use to safeguard this from happening again. Neilson said he thinks the problem is visibility. There was a motion by Cohen, seconded by Benson to table the decision about the Antique show for 191 to the next meeting. Motion carried. CAR SHOW: It came close to breaking even. Cohen made a motion to continue the car show for 191 with budget issues to be discussed with Nerburn. Seconded by Neilson. Motion carried. PARADE: Risley will chair parade in 191. He would like to approach the Lions Club to take it over. Their was some concern about whether the City would still pay for security. LaCrosse said she thought they would, but will check to be sure. Cohen made a motion to continue the parade in 1991 and for Risley to enter into discussion with the Lion' s Club for them to take it over. Seconded by Roen. Motion carried. TURTLE RACES : Bergeland said it went fairly well . LaCrosse said that Arnie Mavis is interested in having the turtle races at the community Center to tie in with a Ninja Turtle Pool Party. Motion by Jacobsen for the city to sponsor turtle races. Seconded by Benson. Motion carried. Cohen had to leave at 8 : 30 a.m. but wanted to make taese comments. He would like to get a meeting together to figure out where we can • get the money to pay the rest of 190 bills. He said the whole community benefits, we have a population that is growing older and its tough to get volunteers. The community has come to expect the free events. We don't have main street merchants like some other communities. Earle Brown Days represents a great image for Brooklyn Center and the City has a commitment to it. CARNIVAL: Presale tickets were $1, 014 . The expense outweighed the income. They may consider coming back if we change locations such as to the Highland property. Roen made a motion to table the carnival discussion to the next meeting. Seconded by Neilson. Motion carried. CRAFT SHOW: Benson handed out a report. The show' s profit was $2 , 399 . 69 less advertising expenses. There were many suggestions from exhibitors. Benson will return as chair in 191 only if there are some changes, such as better signs. There was a motion by Neilson, seconded by Roen to continue the craft show. JUNIOR ROYALTY: Bergeland would like to see an admission fee charged to offset some costs and said Cohen would like to go back to having businesses sponsor some events. There was a motion by Jacobson, seconded by Neilson to continue for 191. • LaCrosse reported Allen Thielen, one of the parents of the past Junior royalty, is interested in starting a new committee. The Committee would be called past junior royalty and there would be no expense to Earle Brown Days. The board of directors said yes. PUBLICITY: Bergeland said this committee needs its own chair. LaCrosse said that Splinter and Mavis saw this as her role and the problem is really lack of funds. There was a motion by Neilson, seconded by Benson to get a publicity chair. Motion carried. Bergeland said approximately $3 ,700 was spent on advertising. NEW BUSINESS: No meeting in August. Next meeting September 17, 7 : 30 a.m. City Hall Council Chambers.
