Earle Brown Days
Meeting Minutes
February 8, 1994
PRESENT: Kragness, Bergeland, Ditty, Nyquist, Neilson, LaCrosse and Linda Hruska
and Ginger Stees representing the Brooklyn Center Tennis Club.
The meeting was called to order at 7:45 a.m.
TENNIS CLUB: Kragness explained that there were concerns about the tennis
tournament being under the Earle Brown Days umbrella. Hruska explained they are
non-profit,are a volunteer group and the tournament is their only fund raiser. She
estimated they would attract 20-50 spectators but that it could increase with the addition
of a junior division. LaCrosse said our insurance only covers spectators and she will
• check with the insurance company to see if there would be an increase in cost to add the
tournament to the policy. LaCrosse said she would like to see Earle Brown Days, Inc.
added to the waiver form. She also said we would like to have more information about
the tennis tournament because park & rec gets many telephone calls.
APPROVAL OF MINUTES: The minutes of January 11, 1994 were approved.
AMBASSADORS: No report.
ARTS & CRAFTS: Bergeland said all of the names are in the computer and a
grid has been made showing her who has participated in previous shows. She would like
to reduce the list for next year. She proposed a postcard with postage be included in this
year's mailing. Those wishing to remain on the list would send the card back. There are
approximately 350 names and the cost would be $70-80. There was a motion by Neilson,
seconded by Ditty to send the postcards with postage. Motion carried. Bergeland said
the Arts & Crafts directory went out and she has already had two calls.
BARN DANCE: Neilson said Killer Hayseeds got a great offer and will not be
available for the barn dance. He suggested a group called Dacotah. He said we can get
them $200 cheaper than Killer Hayseeds. LaCrosse said she had them booked for
Entertainment In The Park and she is paying a great deal less for them. Neilson will
check in to the cost.

Kragness reported the Chamber will have volunteers at the dance. Kragness would like .
to have the line dance instruction one hour before the dance using recorded music.
During the group break, she would like to have line dance contests with trophies as
prizes.
BINGO: Ditty said the Brooklyn Swim Club would like to do Bingo. The contact
person will be Julie Reese.
CAR SHOW: No report.
ICE CREAM SOCIAL: No report.
JUNIOR ROYALTY: Ditty said he had talked to staff at Brooklyn Center High
School. The cost for a building supervisor would be $8 per hour. There was a strong
possibility that the building supervisor would donate his time. Ditty said now there have
been budget cuts and there are no more freebies. They want to charge for a custodian.
He is going over to the high school to check into it. He said there was also a possibility
of using the auditorium for the talent contest. LaCrosse said to be sure to ask if they
allow tap dancing on the stage.
FISHING CONTEST: Ditty said he has a sporting goods store that is interested in
sponsoring the contest. LaCrosse said she will get him information.
PARADE: No report.
•
PICNIC/GAMES: No report.
SUNDAY IN CENTRAL PARK: No report.
TALENT CONTEST: Neilson will get a list of names from the St. Paul Winter
Carnival. The State Fair doesn't keep a list.
8:30 a.m. Terri Swanson, Communications Coordinator arrived.
LaCrosse introduced Terri Swanson and said she will help with publicity this year. The
committee brainstormed ideas for Swanson to work with. (Family fun, picnic basket, not
just family, but community fun or community family, barn logo should stay but theme
changes every year, use a barn with open doors.) Swanson said she would like to
educate people as to who Earle Brown was, maybe with a history quiz. People would
have a chance to win something, maybe t-shirts. One idea was "remembering the past
with family fun."
