Meeting Minutes
July 13, 1993
PRESENT: Bergeland, Dorff, Roen, Neilson, Nyquist, Kragness and LaCrosse.
Meeting was called to order at 7:39 a.m.
APPROVALOF MINUTES: There was a motion by Neilson, seconded by Dorff to
approve the minutes of June 23, 1993. Motion carried.
ARTS & CRAFTS FAIR: Bergeland said it was a good show. There were 5 no
show crafters and 1 no show food vendor. There were 69 total registered crafters and
food vendors. They had 998 register for the door prize. Attendance was down about
400 from last year but the show was larger. She had problems with some crafters leaving
early on Saturday. Bergeland learned from some of the exhibitors that other shows will
• not let crafters back in if they close up early. She will add this to the list of rules for
next year. On the evaluations, the exhibitors expressed an interest in having
entertainment. Neilson :aid a strolling duo might be nice. Bergeland would lik° to
know how much was spent on postage so she can determine how much of a profit was
made. LaCrosse said she will figure it out. They also suggested the food vendors be
spread out among the crafters. Bergeland is not sure it can be done because of
electricity and the size of the trucks. The crafters also suggested more signage. One
possibility is to have a banner put on the roof of one of the buildings. Bergeland said
she didn't know who would do this.
7:55 a.m. Cohen arrived.
Kragness said some of the volunteers who worked the arts and crafts fair and the barn
dance did an excellent job. She would like to see them receive a letter of appreciation.
LaCrosse said if she can get something written up, the recreation office can type it and
get them out.
PICNIC/GAMES: Dorff said the weather was good. They had 168 children and
131 adults. They ran out of water balloons and need to have 144 balloons filled with
water for next year. He would like to get out a letter of appreciation to everyone who
contributed prizes. Next year he' would like to have a letter of introduction similar to
the one he took out this year. The new letter Would have a.list of 1993 contributors on
the back. They had 10-12 Rotary members helping. Neilson said his sound system

worked well. Other possible games that were discussed included -hoe kick, and
watermelon seed spitting and pie eating contests.
PARADE: Roen isn't sure if there are any outstanding bills. One politician
and the Brooklyn Center High School danceline were the only ones who passed out
literature. Cohen said there were some big gaps in the parade. Cohen said he was
wondering what would happen if the Prior Lake scooters got out of control. He
questioned whether they should be in the parade.
TALENT CONTEST: Neilson said he made his report last time. There was some
discussion on where to hold next year's contest. Brookdale will be contacted.
AMBASSADORS: Cohen needs to know where we're at.
BARN DANCE: Kragness reported there were 385 paid participants. It was
very successful. There were also many children 12 and under. The line dance
instruction was very popular and the band was good. She wants to send a reference
letter to the band. Cohen said it was a nice family affair. Kragness said she did receive
complaints that there were too many kids on the dance floor. Neilson said he arranged
the entertainment for Maple Grove's festival. He said they had a line dance contest
which was judged by the person teaching line dancing. He also said we have some of the
most unique and successful events. Bergeland said there will be a bill coming for the
popcorn and supervisor. Bergeland said there has to be more people to clean tables. •
Kragness said she had some volunteers who did not show up and Cohen helped her
clean. She said they worked hard. She said it was herd to run up and down the steps
for the hotdogs. LaCrosse said she will check on the park and recreation department's
hot dog machine to see if that could be used. Bergeland will check to see if there is any
other alternative. Kragness said the line dance instruction could start earlier. Maybe
hats could be sold. However, with the sale of hats, there would be sales tax and the
need for more volunteers.
PUBLICITY: LaCrosse said she would like to see more support from the
Chamber. We have a hard time getting businesses to put up posters or distribute fliers.
During Brooklyn Park Tater Daze, their posters are visible at most businesses. The
chamber should be able to show its support by encouraging businesses to promote EBD.
Cohen suggested Kragness set up a meeting with Mary Welch and the president of the
chamber to discuss this. Cohen said they could sponsor an event, like Rotary and the
Lions Clubs do.
FISHING CONTEST: LaCrosse said that Zenanko was at the contest and adds to
the quality of the program. The number of children was down about 50 from last year.
A couple of committee members won door`prizes at the Picnic/Games. Bergeland said
this may not be a very popular thing but she did not allow any committee members or
2
• crafters to sign up for the door prize at the Arts & Crafts Fair. She questioned whether
committee members should be eligible for prizes. Cohen suggested this be put on as an
agenda item for next year.
HALL OF FAME: Nyquist said the Hall Of Fame was well attended and went
well. LaCrosse asked if someone from the historical society and the tennis club should
be represented on the committee next year. If so, she would contact them. Kragness
said yes.
Bergeland said that two of the volunteers from the Arts & Crafts Fair had expressed an
interest in becoming board members. LaCrosse said Tony Ditty had
also expressed an
interest in becoming a board member. Neilson said he knew someone that might be
interested. Discussion of board members was tabled to a future meeting.
