HomeMy WebLinkAbout2014 01-21 HCM MINUTES OF THE PROCEEDINGS OF THE HOUSING COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF BROOKLYN CENTER IN THE COUNTY OF HENNEPIN AND STATE OF MINNESOTA REGULAR SESSION January 21, 2014 COUNCIL COMMISSION ROOM CALL TO ORDER The Brooklyn Center Housing Commission was called to order by Chairperson Thorbus at 7:00 p.m. ROLL CALL Chairperson-Judy Thorbus,Kathie Amdahl,Peggy Lynn,Leroy Houston,and Zachary Marko were present. Ephraim Olani was absent and unexcused. David Johnson was absent and excused. Also present were Council Liaison Carol Kleven and Staff Liaison Jesse Anderson. APPROVAL OFAGENDA There was a motion by Commissioner Amdahl and seconded by Commissioner Marko to approve the agenda as submitted. The motion passed. APPROVAL OF MINUTES DECEMBER 17, 2013 There was a motion by Commissioner Amdahl and seconded by Commissioner Lynn to approve the minutes of the Housing Commission meeting on December 17, 2013. The motion passed. ELECTION OF CHAIRPERSON Chairperson Thorbus opened up nominations for the position of Chair. Commissioner Lynn nominated Commissioner Marko. Motion passed. Chairperson Thorbus opened up nomination for Vice Chair. Commissioner Lynn nominated Commissioner Houston for Vice Chair. Motion passed. COUNCIL LIAISON REPORT Councilmember Carol Kleven reported that she is not going back for re-election so her term will end at end of the year. Also, City Manager Curt Boganey, Mayor Tim Wilson, Council Member Dan Ryan are in our sister city Voinjama, Liberia. CHAIRPERSONS REPORT Chairperson Thorbus thanked the Commission for the opportunity to serve for the past year. Commissioner Lynn asked if we were going to have a February 19th tour of CEAP and no meeting. Chairperson Thorbus stated she will contact Council Member Myszkowski about the CEAP tour. Page 1 1-21-14 BROOKDALE SQUARE REPORT: Business and Development Director Gary Eitel presented information regarding development opportunities at the recently purchased Brookdale Square site. Mr. Eitel provided a history of the different concept plans for the property. Mr. Eitel also suggested that we have a joint Housing Commission and Planning Commission Meeting at the end of February or early March. He stated he would like to know what we would like to achieve with this site and how to move forward in the right direction. Commissioner Houston asked if this location should it provide for jobs or for money. Mr. Eitel stated that we have to rely only on what the location can support and we will have to have a good product as well. He explained if we design a location with more parking spots then we could get a call center. He added we get to participate in this process and have something built the City can be proud of. OTHER BUSINESS Commissioner Thorbus stated they will be picking a date for City Council meeting open forum. It will probably be on February 24th, 2014. ADJOURNMENT There was a motion by Commissioner Houston and seconded by Commissioner Lynn to adjourn the meeting. The motion passed.
