E veryone has their favorite places
to eat, shop, hangout or go for
entertainment, but if you are new to the
area, it can be difficult to find these
local hotspots. The Minneapolis
Northwest Convention & Visitors
Bureau has recently launched a new
campaign to hear what locals love about
their city and then use the input to help
visitors and new residents find great
local places to enjoy for themselves.
The Minneapolis Northwest
Convention & Visitors Bureau
represents the cities of Brooklyn
Center, Brooklyn Park and Maple
Grove. They offer services to planners
and organizers of tourism, sports, and
meetings and conventions to further
promote local amenities.
Some residents may have already
received a flyer in the mail that can be
filled-out and mailed back, but residents
may also visit www.lovemnw.com to fill
-out the online form to share their local
loves. It is as easy as writing the name
of a business, stating why you enjoy it,
and signing your name. The
information will be collected over the
next few months and shared later this
year.
To further promote awareness of local
amenities, new information has been
created to let you know where to dine,
shop, lodge, and be entertained. Some
new businesses and new residents were
asking about amenities in the area. As a
result, the Shop, Eat, & Meet Map was
created to highlight most commonly
requested amenities such as local
shopping, food, hotels, gas stations and
educational buildings. The map also
shows parks and trails and other
conveniences such as the library or post
office. Copies are available at City Hall
or on the City’s website, search Shop
Eat Meet.

Starting a new business is no easy task, but the Open to
Business program can help. The Metropolitan Consortium
of Community Developers (MCCD) offers free one-on-
one business consulting for entrepreneurs or existing
businesses who want to grow. Their business advisors
travel around the area meeting with entrepreneurs at their
local City Halls.
Open to Business advisors help entrepreneurs create a strong
business plan, and can help with the following:
Sometimes it isn't the technical tasks preventing someone
from starting a new business, but rather a financial
roadblock. If that is the case, Open to Business can help you
find the best financing option(s) for your business needs.
They also have access to direct financing through their own
loan program and loans in partnership with banks and
other nonprofit lenders. Funds from Open to Business can be
used for inventory, working capital, asset and equipment
purchases, real estate acquisition, and other start-up costs.
If you are interested in meeting with an Open to Business
advisor, or if you would like more information about the
program, contact Rob Smolund at (612) 789-7337 ext. 260
or visit www.opentobusinessmn.org.
Keep An Eye Out For EyeDoc
An Open to Business Success Story
Optometrist Dr. Sandy Pham-Vang knows what it takes
to provide quality eye care, she has owned the Sharp
Vision in Champlin for the past five years. Now she is
expanding her eye care services to Brooklyn Center with
her new store, EyeDoc. Her new location was largely
impacted by the services offered through Open to Business,
something she learned about while doing research for
the EyeDoc clinic. “It’s nice to have someone who is
knowledgeable in business regulations and policy, and is
willing to help.” said Dr. Pham-Vang in regards to the
Open to Business program.
Like Dr. Pham-Vang, many business owners know how
to provide great service or products, but the technical
details of opening or operating a business can be less
familiar. After meeting with Rob Smolund, Open to
Business Advisor, Dr. Pham-Vang was more confident
that she had a solid business plan for the new clinic. She
also learned ways she could reduce costs at her existing
location in Champlin. Rob makes calculations and
recommendations about different business aspects to
help a business grow. Open to Business was able to help
Dr. Pham-Vang with loan paperwork, marketing
strategies, purchase agreements, and other necessary
business items.
Dr. Sandy Pham-Vang says her new eye clinic will
employ three staff members and will open in Brooklyn
Center at 7074 Brooklyn Boulevard on August 11, 2014.
A grand opening celebration is planned in August. If
you would like more information about EyeDoc, please
visit their new website at www.eyedocmn.com.

BC Liquor Food Drive
Can We Top Last Year?
BC Liquor Store will once
again participate in an annual
food drive in October. The
food drive is a collaboration of efforts by municipal-
owned and operated on-sale and off-sale alcohol beverage
facilities statewide known as the Minnesota Municipal
Beverage Association (MMBA), and is sponsored by
Miller/Coors. Last year BC Liquor raised 4,395 pounds of
food, much of it being cash donations. The City who
raises the most donations will receive extra donations to
their food shelter. BC Liquor has consistently placed in
the top 5-10 municipal liquor stores state-wide.
In April 2014, BC Liquor held a pet food and supply drive
that was also part of a joint effort with other MMBA
municipalities. The drive was successful in raising the
equivalent of $1,220 in pet food, supplies and cash. All
funds raised by both of these drives are donated locally.

A New Way to Find Youth Programs
Double Your Donation
The Brooklyn Bridge Alliance for Youth recently launched
BrooklynsConnect.org, an online resource to help parents,
youthworkers, and kids find quality youth programs in the
area. This online tool assures youth have access to trusted
adults who are vested in their healthy development and
provide them with opportunities to succeed.
BrooklynsConnect.org also makes it easier for school
counselors and other professionals who work with youth
to find great programs and activities. Users have access to a
variety of search tools such as visual maps or more refined
search tools with multiple search parameters where users
can search by interests, age range, or price. Once a program
of interest is found, you can learn more about hours of
operation, location, who to contact, availability, costs and
more. BrooklynsConnect.org is updated quarterly with new
programs so check back often.
Many of the programs found on BrooklynsConnect.org are
free or inexpensive. Many of the programs take place at
area colleges, libraries and community centers. Currently
more than 350 program opportunities are listed on the
website, and that number will continue to grow in the
coming years as the online tool expands.
The Brooklyn Bridge Alliance for Youth is a collaborative
effort by the cities of Brooklyn Center and Brooklyn Park;
the school districts of Osseo, Brooklyn Center, Anoka-
Hennepin and Robbinsdale; North Hennepin Community
College; Hennepin Technical College; and Hennepin
County. By combining powers of all the founding
organizations, a broader range of youth programs may be
accomplished.

iPad Available For Checkout At Brookdale Library
A New Way to Teach Children How to Read
In June, the Brookdale
Library started loaning out
iPads to patrons. The two
iPads at Brookdale are
checked-out as a pair,
specifically for use by adult
-child pairs. They are pre-
loaded with a selection of
early literacy applications designed for 2 to 5 year olds.
Recently, Library Director Lois Langer Thompson said,
“Exploring carefully selected apps together with children
can help them get ready to read.”
The Library was able to purchase these iPads with funding
from the Minnesota Department of Education as part of a
pilot program looking at iPads and children who are
considered “prereaders”. The program chose iPads
because of the variety and quality of available literacy
applications. Over the course of the next year, the library
will evaluate the program to learn about its effectiveness.
Certain libraries within the Hennepin Country Library
system may soon be seeing iPads for story times as well.
For more information about the iPad program or other
programs at the Brookdale Library, visit www.hclib.org or
call (612) 543-5600.
Double Your Donation—Fundraising is underway to raise $100,000 for a matching grant. Donate now and help
bring $200,000 to our community to build youth employment opportunities in Brooklyn Center and Brooklyn Park.
The deadline for donations is September 30, 2014. Visit www.brooklynsallianceforyouth.org for details.

The preferred (and often only) method for the management
of old propane cylinders and canisters is to recycle them.
Never put a propane cylinder or canister into a dumpster or
other disposal container. Do not cut the cylinder with a
torch or cutting wheel since it may still contain propane and
pose a potential fire and explosion hazard.
Some household hazardous waste collection programs will
accept a limited variety of propane cylinders and canisters
for recycling. Propane cylinders and canisters must be
completely empty before recycling. If it isn't empty, connect
the cylinder or canister to a propane-burning device such as
your camp stove or BBQ grill to burn off the residual
propane.
Some local propane distributors and larger propane retailers
may accept old propane cylinders for recycling as a service to
their customers. Contact propane distributors and larger
retailers in your area to see if any of them offer this service.
Also, some propane exchange companies will take your old
cylinder and charge a one-time upgrade fee in exchange for
new equipment.
Propane cylinders and many camp stove canisters are made
of metal and can be recycled as scrap metal. Local scrap
metal dealers can be found in the phone directory under
listings for scrap metal processing. Always call ahead to
confirm that they accept propane cylinders
and/or canisters for metals recovery.
Propane cylinders up to 20 pounds may be
disposed of free at Lakes Gas in
Minneapolis. For information, contact
them at (612) 529-9276.

Thank you to everyone who participated in the Adopt a Park, Trail, Street or Flower Garden program this year. Your
dedication to making Brooklyn Center a nicer place to live and play is greatly appreciated. Trash is not only unsightly, but
also dangerous for the environment. A litter-free community is a good thing for everyone, and the flower gardens add to
the city’s beauty. We look forward to another great year! If you would like more information about adopting a park, trail
street or flower garden visit the City website, search Adopt A Park.

A total of 110 volunteers collected 105 bags of trash. In addition to
removing garbage and debris from open spaces along the creek and
some roads, 14 city parks were also cleaned up. Keeping the land
clean helps keep the rivers clean as well.
The City of Brooklyn Center proudly salutes you for making this
community a better place to live, work and play in!
Great Shingle Creek Watershed Clean -Up
Thanks You!
This year the City of Brooklyn Center teamed
up with a local elementary school, Odyssey
Charter School, to plant four trees in
celebration of Arbor Day 2014. Two
kindergarten classes and two classes from the
second grade joined us in planting four
trees. The trees planted this year were
Cathedral Elms, a hybrid species of Elm, that
is resistant to Dutch Elm disease.
Students had an opportunity to see some of
the equipment City employees use to maintain
trees, including the bucket truck. Streets
department staff explained the meaning of
Arbor Day, the benefits of trees, and how to
care for them. Approximately 80 students
helped plant the trees.
Each year, the City partners with an
elementary school or group of young learners
to provide a hands-on outdoor classroom for
students to learn about Arbor Day. The event
is a collaborative effort. The City provides the
trees, the Sons of the American Legion
purchases cookies for each student, and the
DNR provides seedlings for the students and
teachers to take home and plant.
Arbor Day 2014
Growing with Trees
As beautiful as the fall leaves are, they mean a lot of yard work for
homeowners. One option for reducing your workload is to use a
mulching lawn mower to mulch leaves into
your yard. It is less time intensive than
raking and the shredded leaves act as a
natural fertilizer during the fall.
While tending to your yard, please take a
moment to sweep or rake leaves, grass, and
branches out of the street in front of your
house. If left in the street, leaves may clog
storm drains, contributing to localized flooding. When washed into
nearby lakes, rivers, and streams via storm drains or ditches, the
leaves become a major source of phosphorus, the nutrient that
allows algae to bloom in the summer. Please dispose of leaves by
composting them in your yard, bringing them to a compost facility,
or bagging them for curbside pick-up if you have that service. Keep
leaves and yard waste out of the regular garbage, and never dump
them in wetlands or buffer areas—it’s illegal!

Dead trees can be hazards to you and your neighbor’s safety,
in addition to a public nuisance . Therefore, it is important to
monitor the health of the trees on your property. If you
purchase a property in the winter, you may not be able to tell
if a tree is dead or diseased, but you are responsible for the
removal of dead or diseased trees. If you have a dead or
dying tree, you should make arrangements to have the tree
removed by a registered tree contractor. A list of registered
tree contractors is available on the City website. Be sure to
check references and the Better Business Bureau records.
Proper and timely removal of dead trees reduces the hazards
posed when dead trees are left standing. Although a dead
tree may exist within the confines of a property, it may cause
damage or harm to adjacent properties or people depending
on the size, wind, and other factors. The risks increase over
time and a property
owner may be liable for
damages caused to
people or property due
to a fallen tree. Dead
trees may also be
infected or become infected with disease or pests. Dead trees
may also fall onto utility services, creating outages,
annoyances, and associated costs of repair.
If you receive a Compliance Notice from the City, please
contact the employee to discuss your plans and time frame
for removal of the tree. Failure to remove a dead tree may
result in fines or criminal court proceedings, in addition to
your civil liability. If you have questions, please contact the
City Forester at (763) 569-3300.
