Shingle Creek Crossing
More stores are opening as the multi-
year phased development continues
for Shingle Creek Crossing.
Michael’s, the arts and crafts specialty
retailer, celebrated their ribbon cutting
and grand opening in May. The store
features items and activities such as:
Home décor and floral
Scrapbooking and paper crafts
Jewelry and art supplies
Kids and tweens department
Custom framing with design area
Kids Club and Passport to
Imagination Classes
The new store design includes
approximately 21,360 sq. ft. and
employs more than 60 people.
According to District Manager
Lawrence McNutt, “Our new store
features thousands of products that
will inspire every crafter at any level
from beginning to expert.”
Jimmy Johns opened at 1480 Shingle
Creek Crossing. According to General
Manager Jason Barrett, besides their
freaky fast service, one of the best
features of their new store is the drive–
thru, offering additional convenience
for customers.
Opportunity Site
Demolition continues at the City-
owned properties at the former
Brookdale Square Mall (NW corner of
Bass Lake Road and Highway 100).
The site is being prepared for future
development. The concept plan
includes new move-up housing
opportunities. The theater was
demolished in June and the event
center will be demolished in July.
There are plans to remove the Strip
Mall later this year. Discussions with
potential development firms continue
for market-rate housing opportunities.
More Construction and
Development
In June 2015, the development at the
Former Howe Fertilizer Site, 4821
Xerxes Avenue, was approved by the
City Council for outside storage. The
developer Hyde Company is planning
to build a 68,000 sq. ft. office/
warehouse/manufacturing facility. The
buildings have been demolished and
contamination cleanup has begun.
Construction may begin fall 2015.
The City Council approved a new
children’s daycare center at Spiritual
Life Church, 6865 Shingle Creek
Parkway.
Luther Brookdale Volkswagen, the
new 32,100 sq. ft. dealership, is nearing
completion with an August 2015
opening date. Luther Auto Group
recently purchased and demolished the
adjacent Shell Express gas station for
additional vehicle display and parking.
Welcome to the
Neighborhood!
Three homes were recently renovated
under the federally-funded
Neighborhood Stabilization Program
(NSP). Renovations include a modern
floor plan with open kitchens, green
building features, and like-new
conditions. All three properties sold
for at or above asking price within
days on the market. More
information about NSP homes is
available on the City website, Search
NSP or by calling the Building &
Community Standards Department.
New Single Family Homes are being
built on six residential lots the City
purchased the past few years as part of
the ReNew/ReBuild program. The
previous houses and structures were

Oh Crap! Please Pick It Up
Not only is dog feces a smelly nuisance if not properly
disposed of, it also contributes to storm water pollution
when it washes into the storm drains and waterways.
Dog feces contains bacteria and is high in nitrogen and
phosphorus. Please dispose of dog feces as follows:
Trash it. Seal the pet waste in a plastic bag.
Biodegradable bags are fine, but don’t break down
in the landfill for years. An alternative is to reuse
bags found in the house.
Flush it. You can flush plain dog feces down the
toilet. However, do not include bags
or other extra materials.
Do not put feces in your backyard
compost pile. Temperatures in
compost piles do not get high
enough to kill disease-causing
bacteria. It can also create pest
breeding sites and nuisance odors.
Recognize Random
Acts of Kindness
Do you know someone who has
performed an act of kindness the past year. Submit a
Random Act of Kindness nomination by September 24,
2015. The City Council will recognize Random Acts of
Kindness nominees at an October meeting. The
nomination form and details can be found on the City’s
website, Search Kindness.
Happy Hollow Meeting
The last Neighborhood Area Meeting of the summer is
September 15 for the Happy Hollow Neighborhood. If
you haven’t attended your neighborhood meeting
previously, we encourage you to attend to hear your
neighborhood and city updates.
Farmers Market
A Farmers Market was approved to
be located at the Sun Foods, 6350
Brooklyn Boulevard. The market will
be open through October 2015,
weather depending. Please contact
Sun Foods if you have questions
about space, hours, or operations.

Let’s Drain the Worry and Stress Out of Aging!
With Dr. Bruce McBeath
Brooklyn Center City Hall, Council Chambers
Way too often aging is associated with stress and loss, including
anxiety about losing people we love. We also fear losing some
of the capacities (hearing, vision, “smarts”) we count on to
function in the world. And, we can become apprehensive about
losing valued aspects of our identity, even apprehensive about
losing our sense of how to live a rewarding life in our older
years. But these fears cast a dark cloud over the riches that come
with our maturity. Worry and stress make it more difficult to
access capacities we now have and need to meet the challenges
we know will come our way. Today, we will put the brakes on
fear and worry and make our aging “stress resistant!”
Join us on Monday, Oct. 5 at 10:00 am as we join over a dozen
other Senior Centers across the state in listening and interacting
with Dr. Bruce McBeath through a joint teleconferencing effort.
