The Sea Wing Disaster: Tragedy on Lake Pepin
by Fred Johnson
The July 13, 1890 capsizing of the steamer Sea
Wing and the death of 98 of its passengers horrified
Minnesota and the nation. A severe Lake Pepin
storm hammered the riverboat, its attached barge,
and their 215 passengers during a Sunday evening
return voyage to Red Wing. Residents of that city,
home to most of the victims, suffered through four days of
anguish: the return of 52 of the dead to the city levee on Monday
morning, 44 funerals on Tuesday, cannons and dynamite used in
hope of raising bodies of the missing, and the recovery of the
remaining victims on Wednesday and Thursday. Twin City
newspapers rightfully called Red Wing the “City of the Dead,”
but small Wisconsin river -bordering communities also suffered.
Diamond Bluff and Trenton each saw ten killed. In terms of lives
lost, the wreck of the Sea Wing ranks among the most deadly
accidents on the nation’s inland waters. Register by February 5.

Roger Maris and a Cast of Hundreds by Gregory Rom
In this historical narrative, Gregory Rom describes the events in
Major League Baseball (MLB) in the years 1957 through 1968.
This was a simpler time when there were fewer teams playing in
MLB. The American and National League pennant pursuits
seemed to unfold with more apparent drama over the course of
the summer. In his unique approach, Rom reports on individual
games of the leading teams in each pennant race. In those years,
the League pennant pursuits led directly to the World Series.
Rom summarizes the key games and player performances of each
World Series of the twelve-year period. In the midst of his game -
by-game narrative, he skillfully interweaves background
information to provide a historical baseball context about the
most successful players of the era. He even references important
historical events in the world, which took place on the same days
when some of the important games were played. Register by
April 8.

LUNCHEON
Tuesday, February 16
11:30 am-1:30 pm
Community Center
Join us as acclaimed baritone singer and storyteller, Steven
Marking presents a feast of songs, stories, film and photos
capturing life on the Mississippi River. After spending 20 years
in New York singing opera, Steven returned to MN and
discovered a new passion and talent. He has an amazing eye for
photographing all things Mississippi River—wildlife, people,
towns, boats. He has woven and edited these images and video
footage together as a background for the river songs of all styles
that he sings so beautifully—from “Ol’ Man River” to “Bridge
Over Troubled Water” to “Up a Lazy River”. Steven’s beautiful
voice combined with his projected photos, storytelling and warm
presence on stage have made him a regular entertainer on the
luxury paddlewheel river boat Queen of the Mississippi and The
Minnesota Centennial Showboat. Lunch is catered by The
Lookout. Registration Deadline: February 8.

Robbie Hart is New Jersey's favorite wedding singer. He's the
life of the party, until his own fiancée leaves him at the altar.
Shot through the heart, Robbie makes every wedding as
disastrous as his own. Enter Julia, a winsome waitress who wins
his affection. As luck would have it, Julia is about to be married

forever. Before show, lunch will be served in Old Log Dining
