HomeMy WebLinkAbout2017 04-24 CCM Work SessionMINUTES OF THE PROCEEDINGS OF THE CITY COUNCIL/ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT AUTHORITY OF THE CITY OF BROOKLYN CENTER IN THE COUNTY OF HENNEPIN AND THE STATE OF MINNESOTA WORK SESSION APRIL 24, 2017 CITY HALL — COUNCIL CHAMBERS CALL TO ORDER The Brooklyn Center City Council/Economic Development Authority (EDA) met in Work Session called to order by Mayor/President Tim Willson at 7:39 p.m. ROLL CALL Mayor/President Tim Willson and Councilmembers/Commissioners, April Graves, Kris Lawrence -Anderson, and Dan Ryan were present. Councilmember/Commissioner Marquita Butler was absent and excused. Also present were City Manager Curt Boganey, Deputy City Manager Reggie Edwards, City Attorney Troy Gilchrist, and Michaela Kujawa-Daniels, TimeSaver Off Site Secretarial, Inc. BRANDING & IDENTITY CAMPAIGN— MR. EDWARDS - continued Deputy City Manager Reggie Edwards provided response clickers to the City Council/EDA and explained the voting options and how to rank their selections. The City Council/EDA voted and Location was ranked 21 %, Housing 21 %, Diversity 23 %, Park Systems 25%, and Quiet and Peaceful 10%. The second set of voting option results were: At the Center 27%, Within Reach 23%, Get closer 19%, and A great place to start 31 %. Mayor/President Willson stated the City Council/EDA needs to re -do the voting again when Councilmember/Commissioner Butler is present to get accurate results. Mr. Edwards stated they will do the survey again when she is present. City Manager Curt Boganey asked if the City Council/EDA can live with their choices of this survey being conveyed to the designers to come up with some logos. It was the consensus of the City Council/EDA that they would be good with the results and using those for logo and tagline designs. Councilmember/Commissioner Graves stated she is a bit surprised with the results of the survey and is interested in Councilmember/Commissioner Butler's responses. Mr. Boganey stated they will re -do the survey on Monday when Councilmember/Commissioner Butler is in attendance at the Board of Equalization Meeting. 04/24/17 -1- Councilmember/Commissioner Graves stated it's interesting that her answers are different now after living in Brooklyn Center for a long time. She stated the reasons she moved to the City initially are much different then why she stays now. Mayor/President Willson stated they may be different due to her access to information now that she didn't have before. Councilmember/Commissioner Lawrence -Anderson stated thinking back to the reason she and her husband bought their house in Brooklyn Center was for the location. But, what she really wants others to know about Brooklyn Center is that they have an amazing park system with over 400 acres of parks and nature areas. She noted the location is also key as it is only 20 minutes to anywhere in the Twin Cities and she has always appreciated the diversity. Mayor/President Willson stated when he first moved to Brooklyn Center it was so they could be close to Evergreen School for their children and they liked all the parks. He stated he would also like to make their park systems be known. Councilmember/Commissioner Ryan stated he feels like it is a small town in the great metro area, and that home is where the heart is. That said meeting was held pursuant to due call and notice thereof and was duly held at Brooklyn Center City Hall. 3.
