HomeMy WebLinkAbout2018 01-16 HCMMINUTES OF THE PROCEEDINGS OF THE HOUSING COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF BROOKLYN CENTER IN THE COUNTY OF HENNEPIN AND STATE OF MINNESOTA REGULAR SESSION January 16, 2018 COUNCIL COMMISSION ROOM CALL TO ORDER The Brooklyn Center Housing Commission meeting was called to order by Chairperson, Mark Goodell at 7:00 p.m. ROLL CALL Chairperson — Mark Goodell - Present David Johnson - Present Tamika Baskin — Present Kathie Amdahl - Present Joan Schonning - Present Also present was Staff Liaison Jesse Anderson and Council Liaison Marquita Butler was excused. APPROVAL OFAGENDA Motion by Commissioner Johnson and seconded by Commissioner Amdahl to approve the agenda as submitted. Motion passed. APPROVAL OFMINUTES Motion by Commissioner Amdahl and seconded by Commissioner Baskins to approve the minutes of the Housing Commission meeting on October 17, 2017. Motion passed. ELECT CHAIR AND VICE CHAIR Motion by Commissioner Johnson and seconded by Commissioner Amdahl to elect Mark Goodell as the Chairperson. Motion passed. Motion by Commissioner Amdahl and Seconded by Commissioner Schonning to elect David Johnson as the Vice Chair. Motion passed. NEW NEIGHBOR PROGRAM UPDATE: Chairperson Goodell summarized the effort to offer coupons for a free item to be included in the packets. Staff Liaison Anderson stated that one coupon request form had been submitted. Chairperson Goodell will try and contact the BBA. Commissioner Johnson discussed dividing up the city and having commissioners go to the businesses. Page 1 REVIEW HOUSING COMMISSION MISSION Chairperson Goodell read the duties and responsibilities for the Housing Commission. FUTURE HOUSING COMMISSION PROJECT Chairperson Goodell: Is there anything in particular we should consider for future projects. Commissioner Amdahl: We should modify and update the responsibilities and ask the council to provide input. The Commission agreed that Chairperson Goodell would draft a letter to the City Council asking for direction from the Council. Chairperson Goodell: Does the city want to consider unified trash service? The commission briefly discussed and decided not to bring back for consideration. Chairperson Goodell: Asked if the city should consider providing broadband internet. Commissioner Schonning is interested in discussing it further. Commissioner Johnson: Would it be supported by fees? Commissioner Amdahl: It could help to make internet access more affordable. Goodell: It could be an incentive for new businesses. The Commission agreed to discuss it further at a future meeting. Commissioner Baskin: We could ask for ideas from the communities. Chairperson Goodell: We could ask people about their concerns about housing. Commissioner Baskins: We could consider a shredding event hosted by the city. COUNCIL LIAISON REPORT In the absence of the Council Liaison no report was given. CHAIRPERSONS REPORT Chairperson Goodell reported: Thank you for attendance. We should proceed with ordering for bags 2018 deliveries and have an updated list of new neighbors for next meeting. OTHER BUSINESS There was no other business addressed by the Commission. ADJOURNMENT There was a motion by Commissioner Johnson and seconded by Commissioner Amdahl to adjourn the meeting. Motion passed.
