HomeMy WebLinkAbout2019-176 CCRMember Graves introduced the following resolution and moved its adoption: RESOLUTION NO. 2019-176 RESOLUTION DISCONTINUING THE SALE OF TOBACCO AND TOBACCO RELATED PRODUCTS IN THE CITY OF BROOKLYN CENTER MUNICIPAL LIQUOR STORES WHEREAS, the City Council of the City of Brooklyn Center is the governing body of the City of Brooklyn Center; and WHEREAS, on Monday, May 10, 2018, the City Council received a presentation from the Brooklyn Youth Council and Hennepin County Public Health Department recommending the issue of tobacco by youth in Brooklyn Center; and WHEREAS, on Monday, August 27, 2018, the City Council heard a presentation from staff regarding options to address the use of tobacco by youth in the City of Brooklyn Center; and WHEREAS, on Monday, October 8, 2018, the City Council held the first reading of an ordinance amending Chapter 23 of the City Code of Ordinances Regarding Tobacco and Tobacco Related products; and WHEREAS, on Tuesday, November 13, 2018, the City Council held the second reading and public hearing of an ordinance 2018-14 amending Chapter 23 of the City Code of Ordinances Regarding Tobacco and Tobacco Related products and was approved; and WHEREAS, Ordinance 2018-14 restricted the sale of tobacco and tobacco products to individuals that are the age of 21, limiting electronic products to tobacco shops, and limiting the number of tobacco licenses issued within the City of Brooklyn Center to 14; and WHEREAS, on Tuesday, November 12, 2019, two individuals, Yong Cheng Yang and Khe Mee Yang, spoke during Open Forum requesting that the City of Brooklyn Center Municipal liquor stores stop selling tobacco; and WHEREAS, on Monday, November 25, 2019, the City Council was presented information regarding the revenue from tobacco sales in the Municipal liquor stores; and WHEREAS, on Monday, November 25, 2019, the City Council came to a consensus to discontinue selling tobacco in the Brooklyn Center Municipal liquor stores when the current license expires or December 31. 2019. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, by the City Council of the City of Brooklyn Center that the sale of tobacco and tobacco products are discontinued in the City of Brooklyn Center Municipal Liquor Stores on December 31, 2019. Butler, Graves, Ryan, Lawrence -Anderson, and Elliott and the following voted against the same: None whereupon said resolution was declared duly passed and adopted.
