MEMO
TO: Blair Tremere, Director of Plann' d I pection
FROM: Donald G. Poss, City Manage
SUBJECT: McDonald's Restaurant Signery
DATE: May 14, 1973
This memorandum is intended to confirm my position which I recently
discussed with you regarding the proposed McDonald's Restaurant plans.
The subject lighted strips or beams on the roof of the proposed building
constitute a roof sign. The question of such lighted decorative roof
treatments was resolved earlier in the case of the remodeling of the
Burger King Restaurant, and it is not subject to reinterpretation.
We have in past years declined to compromise our community principles
regarding signery merely because a nationally franchised business is
wedded to a nationally uniform sign concept. We will, therefore, accept
and process no application for a variance from the sign ordinance in the
case of the McDonald's Restaurant lighted beams. It is obvious that the
standards for considering and granting a variance in this case are not met,
and I have no intention of wasting the applicant's time, the City staff time,
and the Planning Commission and City Council time in processing a frivolous
variance request.
