Talked with heating engineer and architect firm of Roger Johnson. Suggested they install insulation as shown on plans. No notification of change in plans by architect firm. 4/19/61 Upon inspection, no insulation under pipe duct but outer wall insulation installed. No vapor barrier between earth and transite pipe. Architect does not deem it necessary. O.Kid, under protest by building inspector. JACUS & AMBLE STRUCTURAL ENGINEERS December 14 1960 Mr. Don Stark Chief Building Inspector Village of Brooklyn Center 7100 Osseo Road Brooklyn Center 22, Minnesota SUBJECT: Trinity Presbyterian Church Dear Sir: 350 BUILDERS EXCHANGE BUILDING MINNEAPOLIS 2, MINNESOTA RAL 6-4306 We are enclosing several sheets of our calculations on the above project, covering those portions of the work which did not appear to meet your building code. As we discussed in your office, our suggestions for revisions, which should be made in order to comply with the code are as follows: 1. The 16WF 40 in the roof should be changed to 16WF 45 to bring unit stresses within the allowable. 2. The brick overhang at the top of the foundation should be reduced to 1" to comply with the code restrictions on a brick corbel. The face of the concrete bond beam could be extended 1". 3. The drawings should be changed to show the design criteria to be 15#/Sq.Ft. instead of 20#/Sq.Ft. The walls have been changed somewhat since the original job was completed, but our calculations indicate the following stresses: a) 4" brick - 2" air space - 4" brick in classroom wing shows net tension of 7 psi due to wind. b) 4" block - 2" air space - 4" block in classroom wing shows net tension of 11 psi due to wind. c) 4" brick and 12" block bonded walls in sanctuary show a net tension of 11 psi due to wind. This is only at the highest point of the unreinforced portion of the wall. As the wall height reduces the moment is also reducing as the square of the height, so we have investigated the worst point. The allowable net tension in the mortar allowing a 33% in- crease due to wind is approximately 7 psi without inspection and.13 psi with special inspection. Since by code it is with- in the province of the Building Inspector to waive special inspection, we think it would be reasonable to approve the Page 2. stresses as stated above without special inspection, provid- ed the workmanship is good. 4. We expect the roof of the classroom to act as diaphragm, pick- ing up the wind reaction from the top of the long walls, and transmitting it to the end shear walls. Since the code calls for a 200#/Ft. minimum anchorage between wall and roof, the anchors on the fascia channels should be increased to 3/4" @ 4' cc all around. In addition, the last span of roof deck should be anchored to the top of the north and south walls by nailing to a plate bolted to the top of the wall. We hope this adequately covers our final conference on this project and will constitute our final report. We are sorry it has taken so long to put this into its final form.
