Planning Commission 7700 Osseo Road Brooklyn Center Minnesota Gentlemen: Northwestern Bell Telephone Company DIRECTORY DEPARTMENT 2— October 24, 1969 OCT1969 RECEIVED BROOWLYN CENTER, MINN. We have previously made inquiries into the possibilities of placing an identification sign for Northwestern Bell Telephone Company at the junction of County Road 10 and Shingle Creek Parkway. We appreciate the assistance given by Mr. Murphy, Building Inspector, your City Engineer, and Administrative Assistant in explaining the restrictions on signs in your community. However, we feel justified in asking further consideration be given to the need of our request. m You are aware, I am sure, that the name Shingle Creek Parkway currently has very little meaning to people who live and conduct business in the area. The name of the street does not appear on any map as yet; according to the Hudson Map Company, it will not appear until the new map is issued sometime in March of 1970. After a review of your ordinances, we exists in our not having a directional for the following reasons: feel that a particular hardship sign at the above named location 1. In producing, printing, and delivery of directories for Minnesota and North Dakota, the scheduling of such projects is on almost an hourly basis. Deviation from this schedule could involve delays for our customers, the public, or our company. It is necessary for us to have special deliveries of material on time to prevent these delays. Since moving our forces to the Brooklyn Center building, we have had several instances where this material was not delivered for two days, because the Post Office special delivery man was unable to locate 5910 Shingle Creek Parkway. The Post Office has several people who may be involved with deliveries to this location, and would face the same problem. 2. We frequently require our clerical force to work overtime as late as 9 or 10 PM. This requires taxi cabs to be ordered to transport them home. There have been times when the taxi cabs were Planning Commission -2- October 24, 1969 unable to locate the building, resulting in our employees waiting in this building unitl they could find a ride home. 3. This building also houses the Employment Office of our company for the Northern Area, and the address of this building appears in newspaper ads. We are sure prospective employees face similar problems in finding the location. 4. This building will also have a Public Office to serve our customers in this area. Many customers wish to come to our office in person to order telephone service or discuss their telephone problems and would encounter the same problem in locating the building. We assure you that we wish to conform with your restrictions, but feel the installation of a directional sign for six months would help eliminate the above problems. We also feel that in six months the people would be aware of the location of the building and new street maps would be out to assist delivery people, cab companies, and so forth. If you concur on this request, the sign will be made to your specifications and placement only. Thank you for your consideration on this matter. Yours truly, C. J.
