PLANNING COW ISSION INFOFtMA ` :CON SHEET Application No, 65091 Applicant: Macey Sign Company, 451 Wilson Street N.E. Description of Request: Variance to install a free standing sign 40 feet south of the 22' wide driveway on Osseo Road, and 81 from the Osseo Road right-of-way. The sign is proposed as 11'4" overall, and the sign itself has a gross surface area of 50 square feet, Property: Lot 1, Block 1, Ewing Lane Addition, 6215 Osseo Read (teener of Property: Kraus, -Anderson, Inc, 501 South 8th Street BACKCROUND : 1) A, previous application 065066) for a sign for the center was denied by the Council October 11, 1965, because the sign would have been an obstruction to driver's vision, POINTS TO BE CONSIDERED: 1) Bridgeman's was denied s sign adjacent to the Osseo Road (thus one would he 8 :feet from it), but the fact that this is an "integrated development", and Bridgeman's is a drive, -in may have some importance, 2) The frontage along Osseo Road of 396;31 feet allows 712.62 square ,fees; of signing under the present ordinance, 3) Mr. Foss has no objections to this sign at its proposed location, STAFF COMMENTS: 1) This sign variance seems reasonable enough in view of Uie fact that the proposed sign ordinance would allow a sit=:. 22 feet in height and 201 square feet in area. The applicant is ask' ng only 11'4" height and 52 square feet in area. It mi(jht be desireable to reconsider the ' iwpec zab of yislibility" section of the proposed ordinance so that a business might bring its s inn w.ssane down to s i:c or ; feet (except at corner sites if the developer so chooses), 2) The height of signs should be tied to "street grade" at a point perpendicular to the cenL•arline of the street at the location Of the sign, (street grade means centerline grade which is often curb grade also if one eXists . ) M y OR LP -po 10
