C. Ran Oldsmobile 6700 Brooklyn Blvd. Variance The ai plic,_lit seeks a variance from the sign ordinance to permit roof signery in excess of the ordinance heigizt limits. The permitted roof signery, in lieu of freestaaading signs, may be no more than 6 feet above the roof line. The proposed signery would be approximately 33 feet- above the point where Lhe vial?. derparts from t11e vertical plane. The signery would replace existing roof signery ("Velie") or the three fascia panels on top of the showroom building. The total signery for tais establishment is nonconforming, since there a -re several freestand.i ng signs, in addition to the roof signery, all of -,rkiich we_n.3 ewected prior to the currant ordinance. The applicant proposes to bring the signery into conformance, i.e., eliml mate all existing freestanding signery, should k h roof signery be approved, The ordinance would perz-,a-t two freest"aiding signs of up to 250 sgu=e feet in area and up to 32 feet high. Thus, the proposed roof sig ery would be in lieu of this. The contended hardship is that t•.he additional height is needed because of sight obstri?ct to due o terrain and tine FAA 34 overpass at Brooklyn Blvd. Field data, based upon si.glating o the present signery on the tower fascia, support this corL4entio . 0-he con'li t on is not corn on, generally, to o'Cher C-2 property although si.rmil.a' height variances for freestanding signs have been granted to Item's and Holiday inn. Ge-n-a rally, -the rationale as to the weed for additional height because of the terrain and highway ck sr, tructi oil would apply for freentandi ng signery to::. Pl. - Uling C01110- Sion Inj!uimation Shoet. Application No. 75004 `- The recormiendation would be for approval of roof si finery to replace and not to exceed the size of existing roof signery, in Lieu Of anY freestanding identification signs; pxovi.de.1 all existing nonconforming freestanding si.gnery is eliminated. The height request has rrarit and hroul d rot: exceed the prese-nt signer?. Also Uie less free-otanding si.gnery in the area will be for the better, since the density between the freeway and 63tii rhve.nue. aorth along brooklyn Blvd. is quite high. Approval would d be subject to the fallowing 1. The proposed Si-" .Ay shall not exconed the heig:at or area of the exiSt:ing roof singery. 2.
