PROPERTY 0{ "fPi( CLANI GROUND ROUND RESTAURANT BROOKDALE SHOPPING CENTER BROOKLYN CENTER, MINNESOTA #120-1679 INTRODUCTION This report concerns our recent dynamic load testing and pile length evaluation and the inspection of the placement of the production piling at the referenced site. The preliminary soil investigation #23529 was available for our use during the pile testing. The borings indicated fill and swamp deposits to depths of about 201. From 20' to the depths of the borings, the soil consist of fine and medium grained sands. We understand that the building will be approximately 751 x 78' in plan. The structure will be supported on timber piles driven to sustain a design working load of 30 tons each. The cut-off elevation of the piles is 840.91. The purpose of the inspection was to conduct a pile evaluation of the driven test piles and estiablish lengths and penetration resistance criteria for the placement of the production piling. Subsequently,, we were to provide full-time inspection during the placement of the production piling. DYNAMIC LOAD TEST On June 15 and June 16, 1977, a test pile program was conducted at the referenced site. To aid us in our piling evaluation, the Case-Gbble method of dynamic pile analysis was used. This method of dynamic pile testing consists of measuring the force and acceleration at the top of the pile during the actual driving. The signals are then transmitted Page 2 #120-1679 into a small field analyzer at the site, and the static capacity of the pile is predicted for each hammer blow. In addition, the field analyzer also given the energy transferred to the pile and the maximum force at the top of the pile. TEST PILE PROGRAM Five piles were dynamically load -tested during the test program. The piles were driven with a Link -Belt model 440 hammer. The purpose of the dynamic load testing was to verify a safe 30-ton working load (20 tons building and 10 tons negative load) and make recommendations to anticipate pile lengths and driving criteria for the remainder of the piles. The test piles were treated timber piles 60' in length. The five test piles are designated on the attached pile location sheet as pile number 11, 87, 1, 66, and 31, respectively. Piles 11, 87, 66 and 31 indicated a 120 to 150 kips ultimate capacity at a. depth below grade of approximately 451. Pile 1 attained bearing capacity at approxiamtely 501 below grade. The predicted ultimate bearing capacity of the pile at this depth was approximately 170 kips. A graphic description of the driving resistance and predicted bearing capacity for pile number 87 are shown on the attached sheet. Based on the information obtained from these test piles, it is our opinion a working load capacity of 30 tons can be attained on the timber piles. We recommend that a minimum depth of embankment at the location of piles 11, 87, 66, and 31 be at a depth of 40' to 451 below cut-off. Pile 1 indicates that a somewhat deeper penetration should be attained. We recommend that a depth of 45, to 50' below cut-off be established for piles in this area. In addition, to depth criteria, we recommend that a minimum 35 blows per foot be estabilshed for the last f6ot of driving. We further recommend that a refusal criteria of 70 blows per foot for the last 21 be used. ..®._ _ _ .,__-MAIO a.Kft mom_ Page 3 #120-1 679 INSPECTION OF PRODUCTION PILES During the period of June 17 through June 23, 1977, we performed full-time inspection of the installation of the production pile. The piles were treated timber piles driven with a Link -Belt model 440 diesel hammer. Our inspection consisted of monitoring the driving, recording the driving data and inspecting the condition of the driven piles. After the piles were. driven, each piles was inspected for damage, Plumbness and location. The length below cut-off eleva-ion was recorded after the pj'les were marked and cut-off. A summary of the driving records is attached. Reported on this tabulation are such data as pile numbers, date driven, cut-off and tip elevations, total pile length and length below cut-off, final 3" of penetration (blows per foot) and any special notes. Also attached to this report is a Sketch showing the pile numbering and location system. We lyre recorded logs for all 87 piles. The individual driving logs will be main- tained in our office and are available to you upon request. Pile #25 broke during driving operations, due to the obstruction and was replaced by pile #25A. Pile #24 :nd 25A were relocated by rotating the pile cap 900. CONCLUSIONS Based ca the results of the preliminary soil investigation, the dynamic load testing results and our full-time inspection of the pile placement; it is our opinion that all piles placed at the site have been driven to sufficient depth and penetration to sustain a design working load of 30 tons per pile.
