MINUTES OF THE PROCEEDINGS OF THE PARK AND RECREATION COMMISSION
FOR THE CITY OF BROOKLYN CENTER IN THE COUNTY OF HENNEPIN AND THE
STATE OF MINNESOTA
REGULAR SESSION
FEBRUARY 16. 2021

CALL TO ORDER
Chair Sorenson called the meeting to order at 6:30 pm.
ROLL CALL
Chair Sorenson and Commissioners Bonovsky, Dalton, and Ebert were present. Also present
were Acting Recreation Director Joe Ericksen, Public Works Director Doran Cote, Recreation
Program Supervisors Janelle Crossfield, Carissa Goebel, and Jacob Anderson. City resident
Mariah Cannon, and Lindsey Peckinpaugh from Perkins & Will were also present.
APPROVAL OF AGENDA
There were no additions and the agenda was approved.
APPROVAL OF MINUTES – December
There was a motion by Commissioner Bonovsky, seconded by Commissioner Dalton to approve
the minutes of the December, 2020 meeting of the Park & Recreation Commission as presented.
The motion passed.
COUNCIL LIAISON REPORT
Councilmember Graves was not able to attend the meeting.
RFP COMMUNITY CENTER EXPANSION
Recreation Program Supervisor Jacob Andersen presented a summary of the Community Center
Master Plan. Lindsey Peckinpaugh from Perkins & Will, the firm chosen by staff was in
attendance for any questions. Commissioner Ebert asked how much the study will cost.
Supervisor Andersen reported it would cost $80,000 and would be public engagement driven. It
was noted that Perkins & Will is not the firm involved in Playground replacement. No other
questions were raised.
BELLVUE PARK COMMUNITY GARDEN
Recreation Program Supervisor Janelle Crossfield presented a summary of the request from
resident Mariah Cannon for a community garden at Bellvue Park. Chair Sorenson questioned on
the location for a garden. Resident Cannon stated that a location has not been determined, but
would like it to be located near the playground. Supervisor Crossfield indicated that we would
meet Mariah at the park to discuss placement. Chair Sorenson indicated that there is very little
parking available.
Chair Sorenson discussed the general use of the park for soccer and softball. Acting Director
Ericksen reported that the park is used for pick up soccer and the ball field is used for Little
League practice.
Commissioner Ebert shared that it may be helpful to check with residents that have used the
Centennial West gardens what to watch for such as deer problems, etc. Commissioner Bonovsky
would be interested in helping out and supports the garden. Commissioner Dalton indicated she is
for anything that brings community together. Chair Sorenson would like it on the March meeting
agenda for further discussion.
PLAYGROUND REPLACEMENT
Recreation Program Supervisor Carissa Goebel presented on playground equipment replacement
at Bellvue, Northport, Orchard Lane and Firehouse parks. Large signs have been placed at the
parks letting people know about a survey to complete as well as city web page, facebook and
CCX media. Supervisor Goebel reported that we have had 500+ surveys returned. Surveys close
on February 24.
There was considerable conversation on the types of equipment and the number of swings
included at each site. Chair Sorenson stated that there should be equipment for a variety of ages.
Commissioners were requested to send any recommendations to Acting Director Ericksen by
email.
COMMISSIONER APPOINTMENTS
Concerns were raised that none of the commissioners have been reappointed and all terms have
expired. Acting Director Ericksen indicated he will check with the city clerk as to whose
applications have been received by the city and send an email. Commissioners Bonovsky, Ebert
and Chair Sorenson indicated they have submitted applications for re-appointment.
SET NEXT MEETING DATE
The next meeting of the Park and Recreation Commission is set for March 16th, 2021 at 6:30
p.m. via web-ex
MEETING ADJOURNED
A motion was made by Commissioner Dalton, seconded by Commissioner Bonovsky to adjourn
the meeting at 7:30 p.m. The motion passed unanimously.
